Winter Tree Care

Trees get the brunt of Michigan's harsh winter weather. Although they go dormant, they are not protected from the elements. To help young trees that have yet to grow a sufficient root system survive, here are a few things we can do to help.

Wrap: Wrap your trees with burlap or plastic tree guards to help keep pesky critters away and protect the trunk from thawing during the day and freezing at night which can create cracks in the trunk.

Mulch: Before the first freeze during late fall add about a 2" layer of mulch around your trees. This will help insulate the soil and help protect the tree roots against the harsh cold.

Choose your salt wisely: If your newly planted tree is near a driveway or sidewalk and salt is necessary, be sure to use an ice melt that contains potassium, calcium or magnesium chloride. Basic rock salt (sodium chloride) prevents the roots capability of absorbing water, oxygen and nutrients.

The Monthly Pro-September

With fall around the corner and summer coming to an end, it is time to think about winterizing your irrigation system. Freezing temperatures are a major threat to your system and if not winterized properly can lead to costly repairs come spring.

When is the best time to winterize?
The ideal time is well before the first hard freeze! Mid-September through October is the best time in Michigan. Frozen temperatures can cause pipes, pumps, valves and other irrigation parts to burst.

What if my grass dies?
Grass actually does not die, it goes dormant! Though your grass may look dead, its alive. Once the temperatures start to rise again in the Spring, its color will began to change and start growing again.

Tips for a healthy lawn during cold months:

Use a late fall fertilizer - Late Fertilization helps lawn density while also stimulates color & growth
Clean it up - Rake up leaves and debris as much as possible, especially before snow fall
Stay off frozen grass - Walking on grass that is frozen can break the grass blade and damage the turf. This may cause a slight delay in the grass bouncing back next spring

With the peak of summer here you want your irrigation system to work smarter, not harder. Here are a few keys tips that will help your system be most efficient.

Less is More

Most people think that the more you water your lawn, the healthier and greener it will be. In fact this can cause adverse effects. Frequent watering leads to a shallow root system and fungus. Watering your lawn around every 3 days is ideal, it allows a strong deep root system to form making it more drought resistant.

Timing is Key

Believe it or not there is a right and wrong time to water your grass! Early morning between 6-10 AM is optimal. Watering in the morning keeps your lawn cool throughout the day which relieves stress off your grass from the hot summer sun. Watering too late in the day can cause your lawn to stay wet overnight, which can be a breeding ground for fungus & disease.
