Winter is Here!

Progressive Irrigation has been offering commercial snow removal services for 16 years, here are some of our favorite tricks and tips to making plowing and salting less of a chore this winter!

TIP 1:

When plowing a driveway, drop the blade as close to your residence as desired; then back up pulling the snow approximately two car lengths back. Turn the vehicle around and back into the cleaned area. With the blade angled to the center of the driveway, push the snow to the end of the driveway. Finish by pushing the snow into the corners at the end of the driveway.
DO NOT pile snow at the foundation of the building

TIP 2:

Never push snow across a road without first checking the local regulations. In many areas it is illegal to push snow across a road, although some rural areas will allow it

Tip 3:

It is always a good idea to carry a cellular phone or two-way radio with you when plowing or shoveling. You should carry a snowplow emergency kit in your vehicle that includes a blanket, bottle of water, and a snack

Tip 4:

Most wet/dry shop vacuums have an "exhaust" feature that will allow you to easily blow away small areas of snow

The Monthly Pro - December

5 Winter Weather Tips

1. Weatherproof your doors and windows.

It's important to get ahead of the winter weather and make sure your home is ready to handle the cold to come. Check your doors and windows closely for gaps and areas that may cause a draft. Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal them up, or consider replacing the windows or doors if the problem is severe enough.

2. Reverse your fans.

Turning your fans clockwise is a secret to saving money on heat in the winter since it will stop the warm air from rising, AKA keep it down where you want it to be. But how do you do this? Most ceiling fans have a switch that you can simply flip to reverse it—if the switch is not easily accessible on the outside of the fan, it may be somewhere inside.
3. Check for cracks in your water tank.
Another tip is to make sure your hot water tank is crack-free. Chances are if you haven't installed one in 10-15 years, you'll need to replace it.

4. Clean your dryer hose.

Clogged dryer hoses pose huge fire hazards, in fact, according to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. firefighters respond to approximately 14,630 house fires annually that were caused by dryers. You can prevent these house fires by cleaning your lint filter, emptying or replacing your dryer hose, and regularly checking the vent and exhaust.

5. Get an annual fireplace inspection and chimney sweep.

Similar to dryer hoses, clogged chimneys lead to house fires, but they can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Having a yearly inspection and chimney sweep may cost you money, but it could also save your life—so, make it happen. Additionally, make sure the flue on your chimney is fully functional so when the fireplace is not in use, you don't experience drafts.

Progressive Irrigation sincerely wishes everyone Peace and Happiness this Holiday Season. Thank you for another wonderful year!

We'll see you in 2021!

THE MONTHLY PRO - NOVEMBER

LAST CALL FOR WINTERIZATIONS!
Our blow out season is coming to an end with the first hard freeze in the near future. If you have not already had your irrigation system winterized please call today to get on schedule!
Winter Tree Care

Trees get the brunt of Michigan's harsh winter weather. Although they go dormant, they are not protected from the elements. To help young trees that have yet to grow a sufficient root system survive, here are a few things we can do to help.
Wrap: Wrap your trees with burlap or plastic tree guards to help keep pesky critters away and protect the trunk from thawing during the day and freezing at night which can create cracks in the trunk.

Mulch: Before the first freeze during late fall add about a 2" layer of mulch around your trees. This will help insulate the soil and help protect the tree roots against the harsh cold.

Choose your salt wisely: If your newly planted tree is near a driveway or sidewalk and salt is necessary, be sure to use an ice melt that contains potassium, calcium or magnesium chloride. Basic rock salt (sodium chloride) prevents the roots capability of absorbing water, oxygen and nutrients.

The Monthly Pro - October

Labor Day has come and gone, the kids are back in school, and the holidays are fast approaching. With all the things going on in our lives, it’s sometimes easy to forget the small things. The one "small thing" we'd encourage you not to forget is winterizing your irrigation system. We get calls every Spring from people looking to get their irrigation system repaired or replaced due to it freezing over the Winter. If that's not reason enough to winterize your irrigation system, here are other reasons why you should:

Frigid temperatures can do serious damage, which often lead to costly repairs

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. And when it freezes, it expands. This expansion inside your irrigation system can cause parts to break or burst. The only way to ensure your irrigation system is in working order for next Spring Start-up is to have your system properly drained and blown out by Progressive Irrigation. The results of your irrigation system freezing could be very costly from possible line replacement, to head replacement, to an expensive backflow replacement.

Improper Winterizations/Freeze-ups could Void Warranties or Service Plans

You have a great chance that your system will freeze during those frigid months if you don’t winterize it. It is always recommended that you have your irrigation system properly winterized.  Many times an improper or no winterization will void the labor and parts warranties or service plans on irrigation systems that have failed to be properly winterized.

Winterizations should be done by a professional, like Progressive Irrigation. If proper steps aren’t taken when it comes to blowing out the system, it could lead to other repairs down the road. Just blasting a ton of air with your compressor could cause internal damage to key components inside the system or backflow preventer.
The cost of preventive maintenance far outweighs the cost and headaches of repairs or replacing in the Spring.

If you have any questions or want to schedule your Winterizaton, give us a call at either of our offices. We will be happy to put you on our schedule for Winterization 2020.

The Monthly Pro - August

As the temperatures keep rising, there is no confusion that summer has arrived in Michigan. The months encourage great growth and are some of the most important of the year when it comes to your lawns. We encourage visiting some of the topics below with our staff and technicians, to make sure your lawn is covered. Here are some tips worth visiting:

Is your watering and irrigation set up on a proper schedule? We recommend watering early morning. This allows your lawn to absorb moisture without the worry of too much evaporation. It is always wise to have your lawn receive 1” of water every week. Please always keep in mind your local city ordinances, such as water restrictions.

Irrigation systems are a vital tool through these months, as the proper set up can both save you time and assist your lawn in maintaining proper watering levels. Have you had your system inspected or are you currently experiencing issues? Progressive Irrigation is staffed with experienced technicians ready to assist you in assuring that your system is good to go for the summer heat.

August is a great month to revisit your fertilization application. Along with proper watering, fertilization can help make your lawn strong and resistant to many of the issues that ails neglected lawns. At Progressive Irrigation, we like to schedule these applications throughout the year to keep a consistent presence and encourage growth throughout the year – are you set up?

It is also good to remember to mulch and turnover your beds during the next months to help maintain the health of any plants in danger of becoming dehydrated during these hot summer months. A layer of mulch will help prevent the germination of weeds to keep them from growing, help moderate the soil temperature and retain moisture during dry weather, reducing the need for watering. For any mulching needs, please contact Progressive Irrigation to see how we can be of assistance.

Progressive Irrigation works diligently throughout the course of the months before and after summer, to make sure your lawns and landscape are always at their best! We are always ready to assist you with any of your lawn care needs.
AUGUST IS CONTACTLESS IRRIGATION MONTH!

Progressive Irrigation now offers contactless irrigation to all our customers. This means no hassle service calls! With installation, you will no longer need to be home during the time of service. Service can be completed outside without ever entering the customers home.

The Monthly Pro - July

THE DO'S AND DON'TS OF SUMMER LANDSCAPING

DON'T: CUT YOUR LAWN TOO SHORT:
Keeping your grass long will help prevent the onset on brown crunchy crass. Grass needs to stay at a certain length to help fight off drought, cutting too short will destroy its ability to thrive.

DO: FEED AND FERTILIZE ACCORDINGLY
Fertilizing is one of the best lawn maintenance decisions you can make. It will help provide nutrients to you lawn to help it remain thick and healthy during the harsh summer weather. Be careful not to over apply and look for a slow-release fertilizer.

DON'T: WATER DURING THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY:
Watering when temperatures are too high will cause the water to be evaporated before it reaches the roots. The best time to water your lawn is early morning while temperatures are lower and plants can easily access the water that is being provided.

DO:  ENJOY YOUR BACKYARD
With all of the changes the world is going through we can't forget to stop and smell the roses! Make sure you enjoy your summer and the space you have created within your own home. If you need any assistance in keeping your lawn nice, please don't hesitate to give us a call. We can help with all your lawn care needs.

The Monthly Pro - May

April Showers Bring May Flowers!
There are various benefits to having a flower garden. Not only is it visually appealing and can add a pop of color to any landscape, it also holds many health benefits. Gardening has proven to be a sufficient form of exercise and helps increase flexibility. It also creates cleaner, healthier air and has shown to be a mood enhancer.
(Drip Irrigation System prior to being buried under mulch)
Don't have enough time to water your garden every day, and worried it may not survive? Consider installing a drip irrigation system. A drip irrigation system sends water straight to where your plants need it, the roots. This type of system eliminates waste, discourages weed growth, and promotes healthy plants. Which in return will save you money, and help your garden grow to its full potential.

The Monthly Pro - January

Its a new year and a new decade! We hope everyone had a great Holiday season with time to unwind and recharge. Progressive has been working hard preparing for Spring. We plan on 2020 being an exciting year for us, with new services in our foresight!
Energy Saving Tips
Energy bills can sky rocket in the winter months. With Michigan's extreme cold, your home goes into overdrive. Here's a couple of tips to help save you energy and money during the last few months of winter.

Use the Sun!
When the sun is out open your south-facing window curtains during the day to allow the warmth to fill your home. Be sure to close them by night time.

Be aware of your thermostat.
Setting the temperature of your home back 10-15 degrees while you are asleep can save you up to 10% annually on your heating and cooling bills. A programmable thermostat can help make this task easier.

Reverse your ceiling fan.
Hot air rises, so reversing it will bring the warmth back down to floor level.

Upgrade your windows.
On average your home can lose about 30% of its heat through leaks in your windows. Installing storm windows can help reduce your heat loss. For a more budget friendly alternative, use a plastic film to help with the draft.

5 WINTER HOME
SAFETY TIPS!

1. CHECK YOUR SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
Batteries in your detectors should be changed annually. With closed windows and increased use of gas appliances (furnace, gas fireplace, space heaters) the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning greatly increases during winter months.

2. CHECK CLOTHES DRYER VENT.
Depending on the amount of laundry is your household dryer vents should be inspected and cleaned twice a year. Built up snow can prevent the dryers vent from opening properly and letting fresh air into the appliance, which can lead to the dryer catching fire.

3. REPLACE FILTERS
Changing your filters often during the winter months will keep your furnace working its best. Which in return improves the quality of air that you breath and saves you money in energy costs.

4. PREVENT PIPES FROM FREEZING
Turn off water valves that are connected to outside faucets. For plumbing on exterior walls, during extreme colds turn on faucets to a slow drip to have a constant flow of water which will make pipes freezing less likely.

5. INSPECT YOUR WOOD-BURNING FIREPLACE CHIMNEY
Cleaning the soot and built-up creosote from your chimney should be done annually. This will help ensure proper air flow and safe usage of your fireplace.
We hope you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We appreciate your continued business throughout the years and look forward to seeing you in the Spring.
